THANKS FOR STOPPING BY.

I’m the founder and editor of The Sprawl, a local independent news outlet in Calgary. The Sprawl publishes slow news for curious Calgarians, with a laser-sharp focus on municipal issues.

I launched The Sprawl in 2017 to help fill the ever-widening gaps in the city's media landscape. It started as a pop-up journalism experiment and a “slow journalism” antidote to non-stop breaking news. Today, we dig deep into one local story at a time with our award-winning municipal podcast, Sprawlcast. Along with Sprawlcast, we experiment with various side delights as we go including comics, zines and letterpress printing with our tabletop “pop-up press.”

The Sprawl is a trailblazer of crowdfunded local journalism in Canada. We rely on the support of readers and listeners who value our work. In 2023, The Sprawl was named Alberta Magazine of the Year by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association.

In 2024, one of our all-time best Sprawlcasts, “The Hollowing of the Calgary Herald,” was published as a book by Hingston & Olsen.
